Louis Parris, FICA
1. How long have you worked in anti money laundering and compliance?
I have been in AML compliance for six years.
2. How did you land your first role in compliance?
I am an independent consultant working mainly but not exclusively in training. Opportunities arise through my work with the Barbados Association of Compliance Professionals (BACP), where I am also the chairman of the policy committee. Opportunities also flow from through my publications on AML compliance in the local business journal and blog on LinkedIn.
3. What do you enjoy the most about your role?
I enjoy training interactions with compliance practitioners as in my experience they are hungry for training and information. Clarifying issues and giving them implementation tools help them to move forward and accomplish real results in their jobs.
4. What skills do you think you need for your type of role?
Communication skills are vitally important. Due to the legalistic nature of AML compliance, the ability to assimilate legal principles and translate them into operational procedures is vital. Effective communication in the AML compliance arena cannot happen unless it is grounded in solid knowledge of the subject such as is available through ICA training.
5. Do you have any advice for those looking to move into a career in compliance?
AML compliance is a new and highly specialised field. Previous business experience will not be enough to enable you to do an effective job. You must obtain the specialised training and also be engaged in continuous professional development.
6. What has been your career highlight so far?
I was asked by ICA to mentor a student. She was very apprehensive about passing the exam. It was a signal honour and joy when she advised that she was successful at her first attempt, passing with flying colors.
